Road Construction Projects

NOTE: West Yellowstone and the west entrance offer the shortest distance to Old Faithful and West Thumb, with no
impact on routes to Fishing Bridge or the South Entrance. See notes below on Yellowstone fall driving conditions.

Road construction is a normal part of our warm weather season here in the Rocky Mountains. Plan ahead by finding an alternate route or just enjoying any delays.

Make sure to pack some extra water or beverages, tuck in a few snacks, and make sure your camera batteries are charged! When you hit a delay, do what the locals do-
  • Stop your car, roll down the windows, turn off your engine, smell the pines, and relax!
  • Look for "photographic opportunities." It's a great year for brilliantly-colored wildflowers.
  • Listen for Yellowstone's famous songbirds.
  • Meet your neighbors, exchange stories, and the latest wildlife sightings.

  • Beginning August 17, 2009 this section of road is closed for the remainder of the summer and fall seasons. This includes a total closure between Artist Paint Pots through Gibbon Canyon to the Tuff Cliff Picnic Area just north of Madison Junction. (This includes the Monument Trailhead.)
  • During this full closure, anglers will be allowed to access the Gibbon River between Artist Paint Pots to the bridge north of the Monument Geyser Basin trailhead, and from one mile south of Gibbon Falls to the Tuff Cliff Picnic area, as long as they don’t walk on, along, or near the road.
  • The road will be open for snowmobile and snowcoach travel for the December 15 scheduled start of the 2009-2010 winter season.
  • Despite the closure, park visitors will still be able to travel to and between all major locations in the park. However, it may take more time than normal to travel between some locations during this time.
